Software used on the SIO Geowall is predominantly free- or share-ware, developed by various institutions and individuals around the world. The list below is not exhaustive, but showcases the most-used
applications that have been developed for the Geowall system. Applications are in alphabetical order.

3DEM can merge multiple DEMs to provide high-resolution overhead maps and 3D projections of large surface areas, limited only by the computer's memory. Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude)
are shown on all overhead map displays. Both Lat-Lon and UTM coordinates are supported, allowing display and measurement of position to high accuracy. Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver waypoints,
routes, and tracks can be read via serial interface and displayed on 3D images and flybys of the terrain, allowing visualization of the path of a trek through the wilderness.
3DEM uses the SGI/Microsoft OpenGL libraries for high speed 3D rendering. 3DEM will render 24 bit color three dimensional projections, red-blue projections requiring red-blue 3D glasses for viewing,
or color 3D projections requiring Liquid Crystal Shutter (LCS) electronic shutter glasses for viewing.

| EARTHVIEWER 3-D |

|
| Author: Keyhole Corp. |
Platform: Windows |
| This a very clever application that takes aerial photographs from the USGS from the whole world, seamlessly joins them together and drapes the composite image around a virtual globe. You
use your mouse to zoom in and out, tilt the topography, add or remove roads, waterways, terrain etc etc. You can even type in an address and watch as the world spins and the view zooms in to the location!
It delivers full screen 3D interaction on virtually any PC with a 3D capable graphics card (such as those from nVidia) and a broadband (128 kbps or greater)
internet connection. It is free for 30-days, and then afterwards cost $79.95 for a year-long subscription with support. |
| FLEDERMAUS |
 |
| Authors: IVS |
Platform: Windows, Linux, Mac |
Fledermaus is a data exploration and interpretation application. It creates a virtual 3D world in which the user is free to explore and examine data from any angle or viewpoint. Quantitative analysis
of data can be done though Fledermaus's data interrogation features. A powerful set of features is accessed through a graphical user interface.
Cost: in the region of $20,000
*** LATEST NEWS ***
Fledermaus developers IVS are developing a low cost (~$1000???) version of Fledermaus for the Geowall - called Fledermaus Lite. It should be available by the end of August 2003.

| GeoMatrix™ Toolkit |
 |
| Authors: GEOFUSION |
Platform: Windows |
The GeoMatrix™ Toolkit is a 3D global visualization application with superior rendering quality and high performance on a full range of hardware platforms that support
OpenGL™. The software is actually a tool-kit - not a stand-alone application, although the company does say that it can work with developers to build applications. Developers can integrate
this C++, modular software development kit (SDK) with existing applications to provide increased performance and quality global-to-street-level rendering while
reducing time-to-market and R&D costs.
Cost: Per developer seat license, $2,400 per year or $8,000 for permanent. |
ImmersaView is an Open Inventor model viewer for the GeoWall/AGAVE. The data can be a single Inventor model or a flipbook of models that you can animate or single-step through. This software uses Coin3D
and fltk. You do not need to download them yet. You only need them if you intend to compile ImmersaView from scratch.
ImmersaView is currently supported in the Linux, Windows and Macintosh environment.

iView3D is a free viewer for files in the Fledermaus file format [.sd or .scene]. The program contains only the basic viewing capabilities of Fledermaus but is freely downloadable from the IVS website.
iView3D is currently available for Windows 98/NT/2000/XP, Linux, Mac OSX, Sun and SGI platforms. An OpenGL compatable card with good driver support is also required. The latest version can do side-by-side
stereo for visualization systems such as the Geowall.
The application supports almost all Fledermaus data types - DTMs, images, points, lines, models, etc and has
an easy to use widget based interface with a basic geo-referencing information and a vertical
exaggeration control.

Walkabout is an application that allows you to load in terrain models and aerial photographs that drape the model. It was originally developed in Perfomer code, but is now written in Open Inventor, which
makes it much more cross-platform compatible.Once you load in the terrain models (VRML file format) you can explore the virtual world by literally 'walking about'. This application is great for explaining
3-D concepts such as topography, relief and cross-sections. The latest version can be downloaded from:
