UCSD 2003 Admit Dayby Rob Newman Californian high school seniors and their parents who are thinking about an Earth Science major were given an opportunity to see how visualization aids teaching and research at this years UCSD Admit Day on Saturday. The SIO Geowall featured prominently in discussion of the Earth & Environmental Science degree track, with demonstrations of 3-D animations of earthquake hypocenters at plate boundaries, 3-D photos of Hawaiian lava fields and soft-sediment deformation patterns on the Californian coastline. The idea behind using the SIO Geowall was to show students how 'cutting-edge' visualization technology is utilized in geoscience teaching and research, and how such systems really help in understanding the 3-D structure of the Earth. If you wish to use the SIO Geowall for future demonstrations in high schools or colleges, please complete our online request form. |
